WELCOME TO UCLA SPASTICITY CLINIC!
This part of our site will provide you with
information about the clinic, the medical center, various neurological diseases, and the
physicians who treat them.
Spasticity is a chronic disorder of muscle function that results in muscle tightness
causing limitations in mobility or pain that occurs following the damage to the brain or
spinal cord. Our goal is to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary management to
patients with Spasticity and Movement Disorders.
The Spasticity Clinic within the Department of Neurology at UCLA provides diagnosis,
treatment and management of individuals with movement disorders including multiple
sclerosis, stroke, tumors, cerebral palsy and other movement disorders.
Multidisciplinary approach at the Spasticity Clinic at UCLA promotes comprehensive
clinical evaluations. Diagnosis and treatment planning are carried out in a modern
ambulatory clinic, located on the B floor, Suite # 200 at 300 Medical Plaza.
The Center collaborates with neurologists within the Department of Neurology (Movement
Disorders Program) and with colleagues in the other disciplines such as rehabilitation
center, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physiatry and neuro-surgery to address the
complex neurobehavioral problems associated with spasticity.
Several forms of treatment are used, including conventional and experimental medications,
botulinum toxin injections, baclofen pump implantation, orthopedic surgery and
neurosurgery. In all cases, the therapeutic approach is tailored to the specific needs of
each patient. The goal of the Center's treatment program is to improve the patients'
coordination and mobility while increasing their motivation and reducing their dependence.
